Fourth Global Midwifery Symposium

The Fourth Global Midwifery Symposium, ‘Empowered midwives, transformed communities’, took place in Vancouver on 2 June, ahead of the Women Deliver conference3 – 6 June. Co-hosted by the UNFPA, the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and the World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with UNICEF, Jhpiego, the Canadian Association of Midwives and Laerdal Global Health.

The symposium explored the midwife-led continuity of care model that women want; the enabling environment that midwives need to succeed in providing quality care; how inter-professional collaboration can support midwife-led and women-centred care; the power of partnerships; UNFPA’s new midwifery strategy and a call to action to support all countries to have midwives, educated to ICM standards, licensed, regulated, working in inter-professional teams and fully integrated into the health system and practising within an enabling environment, so that women and newborns can receive high-quality care that will transform their health outcomes.
